Det teatrale cirkus – Essays om cirkus, artister, kunst og kultur
By Michael Eigtved
This book is in Danish.
Essays about circus, artists, art and culture. Edited by Michael Eigtved. From the mid-1970s the circus genre has undergone a kind of youth revolt. A new generation of artists have grappled with the traditional form. The dressage of wild animals and figures like the white clown and August are all gone. And the circus director with high hat and a shouting voice is also gone. In the new circus the artist is still at the center with his marvellous display of man as a work of art. In an entirely new context, where classic art of circus is mixed with art, music and theater of the 20th century, there is room for both the noisy, the poetic, the adventurous and the brutal. "Det teatrale cirkus" is the first book in Danish which describes the new circus. A series of prominent Danish and foreign theorists and practitioners enlighten the phenomenon aesthetically and historically, and both the artists work with his art and the cultural-political tension surrounding the circus are mapped.
